Productivity Tip 12 Co-Products and By-Products

Back to Productivity Tips History Page

Co-Products and By-Products are used by many types of industries where more than one product is produced from a single process. Three examples of this are:

  1. The Meat Industry where a carcass is segregated into 'cuts' of meat (or Co-Products). This process can also create waste products (By-Products) which may be held as a Product in their own right or simply recorded as scrap. One key feature of this style of Process Manufacture is the option to identify the Raw Material back to its Source and thereby providing both Quality and Traceability links from Raw Materials through to the Finished Goods.
  2. The Discrete Manufacturing Industry also uses Co-Products and By-Products. If something can be “recovered” during production and it is either used or sold, or if there is a “disassembly” process with a discrete environment, Co-Products are a useful resource to accurately represent those production steps in an ERP solution.
  3. The Plastics Industry Processes such Thermoforming, Transfer Moulding, Injection Moulding, Compression Moulding all have Co-Products and By-Products. I.e. A single 'Shot' of the Mould can produce more than one product. (Co-Product). At the same time surplus flashing can be trimmed and either identified as usable 'Regrind' or simply identified as scrap.

Although all of the above industries use Co-Products and By-Products, these features are not normally found in business software for the small to medium size enterprise (SME). The advantage of using Ostendo Operations Software is that these features are inbuilt and fully integrated throughout the system which results in a 'Complete' process that can be more effectively managed with less effort.
